THE LICENSE DEBATES
January 21st, 2022 In August of 2021, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an article titled "Covid-19 Rekindles Debate Over License Requirements for Many Jobs". In it they shared that an executive order would be signed by President Biden in September of 2021 calling for "the Federal Trade Commission to ban unnecessary occupational licensing restrictions that impede economic mobility". THE HISTORY OF BARBERING
January 20th, 2022 Barbering is one of the oldest professions in history, and there is more to its story than cutting hair alone. I became interested in this topic after reading an article published by the History Channel titled "Why are barber poles red, white and blue?". The article shares that "barber pole’s colors are a legacy of a long-gone era when people went to barbers not just for a haircut or shave but also for bloodletting and other medical procedures". On the pole, the red represented blood, the white bandages, and the blue veins. Read on to learn more. |

SURVEYING CUSTOMERS
February 2nd, 2021 All businesses need to track customer feedback, and individual stylists are no exception to this rule. HAIR LICENSE RECIPROCITY
October 13th, 2020 Has the time come for you to move your practice to a new state? Reciprocity is the exchange of licensure or privileges to practice a certain trade within different countries, states and institutions. In the United States, reciprocity could involve several factors depending on the state you're moving to and the state you're coming from. This guide will help you think through transferring a cosmetology or barbering license via reciprocity. |
GENDER NEUTRAL PRICING
October 2nd, 2020 In the US, few states offer protection against gender-based price discrimination. Where protection exists, it is rarely enforced. Salons have traditionally quoted higher prices for female haircuts and lower prices for male ones. Such a pricing can be problematic for people who identify as non-binary or gender fluid, as they have to choose between pricing targeting a binary customer base. It also calls into question the ethical way to price haircuts for the hair industry. |
HAIR ICON DOUGLAS MCCOY
August 19th, 2020 As you likely know, California salons have been shut down for most of 2020 due to COVID, meaning I haven’t been able to practice my craft. It’s been bumming me out a lot lately, so my husband surprised me with a road trip to a remote Airbnb in a scenic part of Washington. The surprise included a haircut by the one and only Douglas McCoy at his salon for some badly needed hair TLC (salons in Washington have been open since June 1st)! I used the opportunity to write a post on how a legend operates his salon. |

AB-5 FOR HAIR SALONS
February 5th, 2020 Groundbreaking new California legislation, which took effect in January of 2020, is impeding many companies from claiming workers as independent contractors. A-B5 codifies, clarifies and grants exemptions to a 2018 California Supreme Court decision called Dynamex. Read on to learn how this will impact California workers in the hair industry. |
