Grab your coffee. During the days of “Shelter-in-Place" it seems like everyone is “phoning it in” to work. My favorite of the conferencing apps is Zoom. Since we all need a laugh right now, I'm sharing a few funny stories about Zoom below, plus tips on getting your hair ready for video calls.
Modern Ferris Bueller
Let's start with the least amount of effort one can put into a Zoom call. The U.S. Sun shared a story about a man named Matt Buckley who had figured out how to make it look like he was working at this computer via a Zoom loop video. This "[allowed] him to potter about his home while appearing to be hard at work". Read the full story here. Maybe you're not totally comfortable with cheating like Matt, but his approach is also useful when you need to cover up a messy room behind you. The same feature lets you add backgrounds to the call. More tips on how to use these from the Zoom Help Center here.
Stock Mix Up
Recently, The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission suspended the purchase of stock in Zoom Technologies (ticker symbol: ZOOM). That was okay with Zoom Video Communications (ticker symbol: ZM), which owned the stock people thought they were purchasing. According to Fortune Magazine, “Zoom Technologies, a so-called penny stock traded over the counter, had risen more than 240% over the same time frame before the SEC suspended it. At its high at the end of last week, the 'ZOOM' stock had increased nearly sevenfold—from around $3 a share to more than $20—in the span of a month". Read the full article here. With the uptake in video conferencing in March, most people thought they were getting a great deal on the stocks, but turns out that was a misunderstanding.
Shirt Purchases Are Up, Pants Purchases Are Down
In line with the increased use of Zoom, Walmart has seen a rise in people buying shirts, but a decrease in people buying pants. This is assumed to correlate with everyone now using Zoom for work, where your shirt matters but no one can see your pants. Read the full story published by CNN here.
Zoom Hair
Remember, on Zoom calls you only need to look dazzling from the front! For those of us with long hair, here are some tutorials to help you quickly look pulled together despite living in your pajamas.

Hair Consultations (Tip for Stylists/Barbers)
I'm a big fan of in-person consultations, but the show must go on while we're stuck inside during COVID-19. During a time of shut down, and possibly beyond, we should all get comfortable with doing a consultation on a video call. For stylists like me, consider adding this to your online booking options. We can help our new and existing clients clarify ideas around the services they want before meeting in person. This could include nailing down a look, understanding pricing, and how to prepare for a hair change. You can also use this as a way to stay in touch with clients on styling and product recommendations during social distancing restrictions. Many of them want to know what they should do to keep their hair healthy and how to prolong their hairstyle/cut while waiting out the shut down until their next appointment .
