Bangs Hair Guide
Bangs Hair Guide
January 9th, 2023
Looking for a more impactful way to change your hair? Bangs can create softness or add edginess to your look, and the types to choose from are endless. In America we call them bangs, but in Britain they're more commonly known as a "fringe". Either term simply means strands that are cut short to sit on the forehead, cheeks and jaw. The extra volume and texture that a bang can add goes a long way, especially for curls. Below I give you some guidelines around bangs to help you decide what could work for you.
Bang Techniques
Bangs Worn Blunt
Strong, full, sharp and heavy are the words to describe blunt bangs. The more blunt the bang the more maintenance it will need. Length also matters here because if blunt bangs are worn too long the wearer will not be able to see.

Bangs Worn With Texture
Soft and wispy are the words used to describe bangs with texture. They are the opposite of blunt bangs, tending to blend into the rest of the haircut. This technique works well with both long and short styles.

Bangs Worn With Layers
Movement and lift are the words used to describe bangs worn with layers. Layers break the bang up into shorter and longer pieces that add volume and shape. This technique works well with both long and short styles.

Bang Shapes
Straight Across Bangs
The hair is worn straight down the front of the face, as opposed to swept off to the sides of the forehead. The shortest pieces fall around the brow bone, and then get progressively longer towards the temples. They're considered "grown out" when they impact your ability to see.
- Styling Technique: Generally a center part or slightly off center. Bunt or textured. It can be layered.
- Maintenance: 4-6 Weeks for trims. High Maintenance.

Side Swept Bangs
bang with hair stretching from one side of the forehead resting on the other side . The hair is cut slightly longer than straight-across bangs but not always. I usually see cheekbone and upper lip length as the shortest length and jaw bone for the longest length. If the side-swept bang was not brushed to one side of the face, it would cover one eye area and the other eye would be exposed. If you are unsure about a bang this is a great place to start. Simply because It can easily be blended back into the hair.
- Styling Technique: Side part. Blunt or textured. Textured is generally preferred. It can be layered.
- Maintenance: 8-12 weeks for trims. Low Maintenance.
Curtain Bangs
It is rather similar to side-swept in terms of length and to textured in terms of styling and thickness. The biggest differerece is the hair pushes outwards to the sides of the face and is longer as it goes on the sides. The length can vary. The shortest lengths are sometimes the cheek bone. Progressively into the longer length of the recession of the cheek bone or even as long as under the jaw.
- Styling Technique: The hair is worn parted down the middle or slightly off center. Can be blunt or textured (textured is generally preferred). It can also have layers cut into it.
- Maintenance: 10 - 12 weeks for trims. Low Maintenance.
Baby Bangs
These bangs are worn super short for a dramatic effect, with the hair cut high above the brow bone. I usually recommend them to someone with fine straight hair, though they can work on curlier textures if you're willing to put in the work to style them smooth and straight. In fact, as you'll note in the pictures below, people with curlier textures often opt to wear these bangs.
- Styling Technique: Generally a center part or slightly off center. Bunt or texture. It's generally not layered in straight hair.
- Maintenance: 4-6 Weeks for trims. High Maintenance.
Rounded Bangs
When I think of round bangs my mind immediately goes to 50's pin-up girls. This bang is shorter towards the temples and longest in the center. You can think of it as the inverse of Straight Across Bangs, with the longest pieces falling around the brow bone and the shortest pieces sitting above the temple.
- Styling Technique: These work with a center part or slightly off centered one. They can be bunt or textured (blunt is generally preferred).
- Maintenance: 4-6 Weeks for trims. High Maintenance.

Built In Bangs
Built in bangs occur naturally on shorter hairstyles. The wearer arguably has to pay more attention to their bangs in this case since it can dramatically change the way a shorter haircut frames their face.
- Styling Technique: These bangs generally aren't worn with a part, instead being combed forward to frame the face. They are almost always cut with texture to give a feathered look.
- Maintenance: 4-6 Weeks for trims. High Maintenance.

Curly Bangs
Short, long, rounded, layered - when a haircut has curly bangs the result can be beautiful. For styling, a lot of people can just comb the bangs down and apply their favorite styling gel. Twisting the curls in the bang section to get more definition is also common.
- Styling Technique: All parts work with this type of bang, though one may not always be visible. They can be bunt or textured (textured is generally preferred). Layers can also be used.
- Maintenance: 4- 12 weeks for trims. See each category above for more details (Straight Across Bangs, Side Swept Bangs, Curtain Bangs, Baby Bangs, Rounded Bangs and Built in Bangs).
